A book can open a whole new world for a child.
At the Igugu Aftercare Centre, children arrive every afternoon after school ready to learn, grow, and dream bigger. For many of the children who attend, Igugu provides more than just after-school support, it offers a safe, structured environment where they can feel cared for, supported, and inspired.
The Igugu Aftercare Centre is hosted in a dedicated classroom at Sparrow Schools, giving us a wonderful opportunity to create a warm and welcoming space for our aftercare children, many of whom come from underprivileged or vulnerable backgrounds.
Each day at Igugu, children receive:
🍎 A nutritious meal after school
📚 Homework support and study time
🛡 A safe place to spend the afternoon
💛 Care, encouragement, and stability
But this World Book Day (23 April), we want to make the space even more special.
Our Dream: A Reading Corner for Igugu
We are creating a reading corner with a small library where children aged 7–13 can explore stories, discover new ideas, and develop a lifelong love of reading.
Books are powerful tools for imagination, confidence, and learning. A simple story can help a child:
• travel to new worlds
• see themselves reflected in stories
• improve reading and language skills
• build curiosity and creativity
For many of the children at Igugu, access to books at home is limited. A small library at the aftercare centre can make a huge difference to their learning journey.
How You Can Help
We are asking our community to help us fill the shelves.
✨ Donate new or gently used books for children aged 7–13.
We are especially looking for:
• Adventure stories
• Fun chapter books
• Educational books
• Activity books
• Age-appropriate fiction and non-fiction
Every book donated will help us create a space where children can discover the magic of reading.
