29 May – 5 June marks National Child Protection Week in South Africa – a time to reflect on our shared responsibility to create safe, nurturing environments where children can learn, grow, and thrive.
At Rainbow Children’s Village, one of the ways we do this is through our Igugu Education Centre, an after-school care programme at Sparrow Schools that provides support, stability, and opportunities for children who need it most.
Every afternoon, children arrive at Igugu to find more than just a classroom. They find a safe space where they can complete homework, receive educational support, enjoy creative activities, build friendships, and receive a nutritious meal. For many, Igugu is a place where they can simply be children, free to learn, play, and dream about the future without having to worry about their safety.
As part of National Child Protection Week, we are working to make the Igugu classroom an even more welcoming, inspiring, and child-friendly environment. We want to create a space that sparks curiosity, encourages learning, and helps every child feel valued and supported.
To achieve this, we are asking our community to help us by donating items that can enrich the learning experience and improve the classroom environment.
Items We Are Looking For
We would greatly appreciate donations of:
- Educational toys and games
- Children’s books (new or gently used)
- Bookshelves, play mats, carpets, and reading cushions
- Stationery, including pens, pencils, crayons, colouring books, glue, and scissors

Every contribution, no matter how big or small, helps us create a more engaging and supportive environment for the children in our care.
